Rachael Gillespie: Leading with Purpose at Rotacon Engineering
Introduction
Rachael Gillespie stands as the major shareholder of Rotacon Engineering, a proudly South African mechanical engineering firm renowned for its expertise in fabrication and machining. “Basically, we make components,” she explains, describing the company’s capability to manufacture parts ranging from the very small to those weighing up to 16 tons. Rachael attributes Rotacon’s success to their advanced computer numerical control (CNC) machinery, which has enabled the company to serve industries throughout Africa and beyond.
From Receptionist to Major Shareholder
Rachael’s journey with Rotacon began in 1996, but her connection to the company runs even deeper. After completing matric in 1994, she joined Rotacon in 1996, following in the footsteps of her father, who also worked for the business. Rachael’s twin sister, Leah, was the receptionist at the time and made way for Rachael by accepting a position at a sister company.
Her initial role was administrative, but it quickly grew into a lifelong calling. “I started off as a receptionist in 1996, and in 2002, I became a shareholder,” Rachael recalls with pride. Over the years, she learned the intricacies of the business and steadily advanced, ultimately becoming the major shareholder in 2024, holding 87 percent of Rotacon’s shares.
Rachael's rise within the company was not fuelled by formal engineering qualifications but rather by determination and an unwavering commitment to excellence. “I do not hold a degree in engineering, so what I know today has come from working for 29 years in the business, learning the trade, and having a strong team around me,” she explains.
She credits her achievements to hard work, dedication, and faith. “We are nothing without Him, so all glory belongs to Him,” she shares sincerely, referencing her belief in God.
The Power of People
Family has always been at the heart of Rachael’s journey. Her greatest aspiration has been to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. “I love people, and I have always been passionate about mentoring and upliftment. Through the success of the business, we are able to enrich the lives of others, and that is one of my dreams that has been fulfilled,” she says.
Rachael’s gratitude for those around her shines through as she reflects on her sources of inspiration. “I cannot say it is one person, because there are so many people around me who have inspired me.” She acknowledges her husband for supporting her in advancing the business, and her family for their sacrifices, especially her parents who prioritised education. While her father has passed away, her mother remains a pillar of strength.
Her siblings and extended family also continue to motivate her. “They have always believed in me,” she says, noting the encouragement she received even during times of self-doubt. Rachael is deeply involved in her church, where her church family has offered guidance and encouragement.
This passion for people extends into her professional relationships as well. “Because I love people, I have built close relationships with our customers and suppliers. Through that trust, we receive a lot of support, and that has really helped the business,” she explains.
Rotacon’s growth has been further propelled by Rachael’s leadership and the company’s commitment to transformation. Achieving level one B-BBEE status as the majority shareholder has enabled Rotacon to secure government contracts, which are vital for business success given current policies. Rachael also notes that being a woman has provided an advantage in this space.
Empowering Women
Rachael is aware of the challenges women face in the traditionally male-dominated engineering sector. “When you interact with men in this industry, they sometimes tend to look down on you, as if you do not know what you are talking about,” she admits. Nonetheless, she has always remained professional and authentic, letting her results speak for themselves. Her achievements stand as proof that women can succeed in male-dominated industries.
Under Rachael’s leadership, Rotacon has made a concerted effort to employ women in key roles. “I want women to know that they can succeed in this industry,” she emphasises. “My success in the business has proven that, and I hope it inspires others. I love empowering people, and that has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my journey.”
Her advice to young women is both simple and powerful: “Believe in yourself. Do not let the world define who you are. Especially now, in the age we are living in with technology, women often feel they have to live up to a certain standard. My advice is just to be yourself. Believe in yourself and know that you can do anything you put your mind to.”
Looking Ahead: Goals and Vision
Rachael has clear ambitions for both her company and her personal mission. “The aim is for the business to diversify and to keep growing. Through the business being financially successful, we are able to uplift people who are less fortunate. That is my dream, to use the company as a platform to empower people.”
She firmly believes that people are the most valuable asset in any organisation. “Without our employees, the business would not be where it is today,” she states.
Finding Balance
Despite her demanding professional responsibilities, Rachael makes time for the things that keep her grounded. “I love the outdoors,” she shares warmly. “I am a drone enthusiast, so I fly my drone in my spare time. I spend a lot of time with family and friends, and I am very involved in my church. I try not to take the business home, especially because my husband is also in the business. We leave work at work and home is home.”
